An Interactive List of Black-Owned Bookstores
Hi everyone. In light of everything going on, I’d like to reiterate one of the beliefs I have adopted for the last couple of years, and that is— who you give your money to matters. It matters because the money you give them goes to fund their beliefs, whether the “they” in this example is an entire company, a company’s founder, or even a group of investors. By buying from a company you are financially aligning yourself with their beliefs. This includes ordering a chicken sandwich from Chik-fil-a who will use that sandwich money to fund anti-LGBTQIA+ conversion therapy or buying a book from Audible/Amazon when they purposely use their platform to destroy library lending services through copyright laws.
Your money matters, so give it companies that align with your beliefs. That uses their platform to make the world a better place instead of a worse one. Give your money to the people you love and love you back. Below is a list of Black-Owned Bookstores from all over the United States. Many of them are mailing books to their customers because of COVID restrictions and many of them also have book clubs for you to join and build community. Because of the recent resurgence in revolution, many of the bookstores below have anti-racist reading lists for those who’d like to stay educated and fight for the liberation of Black people everywhere— #BlackLivesMatter.
As of right now, this list includes 19 of the 50 United States. I’d like to grow this list to cover all 50 states and internationally so if you have any favorite bookstores that need recognition please contact me using the Contact Button below.
